Newborn Photography - Geraldine Ralph Photography

Please read this guide thoroughly and follow it to the best of your abilities to ensure a successful newborn session.

WHEN TO PHOTOGRAPH: 4-10 Days Old Newborns are best photographed within the first two weeks of life. The best age for a successful newborn session is 4-10 days old as they are still sleeping and flexible! This is also a good time because baby acne usually has not appeared yet. This is essential to creating a true newborn look and poses for your session.

THINGS TO DO: Be Prepared Breastfed Babies:  If nursing, try to avoid eating anything spicy or anything that will cause gas and might upset baby’s tummy for 24 hours preceding your scheduled session. A gassy baby will not pose well during the session due to their little tummy being upset. Keep Them Awake:  Interact with and keep baby awake for 1-2 hours before your session to ensure he/she is good and sleepy for the session. This is very important. Without this, we spend too much time getting them to sleep and not as much time photographing them. Stimulating your baby with a warm bath before their session usually does the trick! Feed Them:  Make sure baby is nice and full for the session. Feed your little one 20 minutes before the session. It is not unusual for your little bundle to eat during the session as well. A full baby equals a sleepy baby, and we need a very sleepy and calm baby in order to achieve the sweet, flexible poses you see in our portfolio.

Dress Easy:  Dress baby in loose fitting clothes to avoid any lines on baby’s skin and to also avoid disturbing baby when getting undressed. A simple sleeper is best. Please avoid onesies or anything that has to be pulled off over baby’s head and loosen diaper tabs prior to the session. Pacifiers: Bring a pacifier if possible – they can be very helpful during the session!  Circumcision: To help make your little ones session a success, we highly recommend scheduling your newborn session 1-2 days prior to his circumcision. Due to the large amount of pain that they will be in if their newborn session is done while the healing process is still happening. If you chose to wait until after the circumcision has been preformed, we ask that you bring them in 1-2 weeks after their appointment so that they are fully healed and ready to go! Turn Up The Heat:  Babies are most comfortable in a nice warm space. We do use a space heater but the most successful shoots are when the environment is around 85 degrees. If we're not sweating, baby is probably not warm enough. This makes a HUGE difference! We also make sure that your little bundle stays nice and warm during an outdoor session.

Pick the Place:   Our newborn sessions are done in our dedicated in home studio, but depending on the time of year we also offer outdoor newborn sessions at select locations.  Accessorize:  We provide all of the outfits and props for your little one's session and we have a fully stocked selection for you to choose from. If you do happen to have any heirloom or personal items that you would like to have included in your baby's session (ie. teddy bears, a hand made quilt from grandma, or any items pertaining to your profession such as a football uniform, police uniform, firefighter uniform, etc.) please let us know in advance so that we can discuss the different options to incorporate those items into the session.

THINGS TO KNOW: Be Informed Naked Baby:  Your newborn may be photographed in his/her birthday suit for part of the session, but we pay careful attention to ensure private parts are not exposed in any photos. Clothes tend to be bulky and awkward so we find that a naked baby is a happy baby!

Safety is Key:  We will NEVER put your sweet baby's safety at risk. Any and all poses attempted are well practiced and your baby's well being is kept at first priority at all times. I am a mom myself and have numerous experiences handling newborns.  Don't Fret:  Baby's cry, poop, pee, spit up and lots of other fun things. I am used to it! I know specific techniques to soothe babies when crying. Trust that we will hand baby over if they are truly upset, and know that we will trust your parental instincts too! Do not worry about any of the blankets or backdrops involved in messy accidents. This is normal and I don't think I can tell you how many times I've been pooped on! (honestly, if we let them get it out, they will sleep much better!) All of our blankets and props are washed after each session with a hypoallergenic baby safe detergent.  Slow & Steady:  We spend a lot of time getting every little finger and toe positioned perfectly when photographing your little bundle. But first and foremost, it is important to us for your baby to look comfortable and peaceful in the photographs and for each image to be a piece of art that you will treasure for the rest of your life!  Motto:

Our motto is, quality over quantity when dealing with newborns. It may seem like we are moving at a snails pace and you may be afraid we wont get in enough poses, but baby's work better when there is little stress or movement and they can relax. We would rather you have a handful of great photos than a ton of okay ones.

Time: The session may be between 2-3 hours depending on how cooperative baby is. This leaves room for changing, feeding, and soothing breaks! Poses: Please keep in mind that not all babies will cooperate or do all the different poses. Trust in us that we will attempt all of the poses that we normally do with our little clients but if we feel like it's not going to happen, or if there is a specific reason that we cannot achieve a certain pose, we will move on.

Siblings: The addition of siblings is probably our favorite part of photographing newborns! We love seeing the genuine love and affection between your children. When adding siblings to any photoshoot that involves a newborn baby, it is important to educate your young child(ren) on how to snuggle in close while keeping your tiniest bundle safe! We are here to help guide the process along so that your children stay safe at all times!

Parent/Family Shots: These images are another absolute favorite of ours to capture! We will carefully place your little one so they are 100% secure in your arms and while there is a variety of different poses that we can capture for parent/family shots, my assistant will be close by at all times just as a backup method of safety. This helps parents feel a little more at ease when we have a squirmy baby.
